About Premiered in 1806, Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major paved the way for three great violin concertos of the 19th and 20th centuries: Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Sibelius. Extremely expressive and astonishing in it emotional scope, the work nonetheless received an ambivalent response at its premiere. At some point in 1790–2, before his musical maturity, he began a Violin Concerto in C, of which only a fragment of the first movement survives. Whether the work, or even the first movement, had ever been completed is not known. In any event, it was neither performed nor published. Later in the 1790s, Beethoven had completed two Romances for violin

Composer: Beethoven.

Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, in 1806. Its first performance by Franz Clement was unsuccessful and for some decades the work languished in obscurity, until revived in 1844 by the then 12-year-old violinist Joseph Joachim with the orchestra of the London Philharmonic Society conducted by Felix Mendelssohn. Mutter's soaring passages, done with the slightest amount of pressure and an unfailing technique in the highest registers of the violin, does not allow the orchestra to swallow her up. Her sound touches upon ethereal and reaches into the listener's soul, especially during the first (and longest) movement.

That quotation opens the booklet included in DG's deluxe packaging of Anne-Sophie Mutter 's new recording of Beethoven 's Violin Concerto and violin Romances. The statement ironically illuminates the two fundamental flaws of Mutter 's performances: they are themselves neither mature nor humble.

The statement ironically illuminates the two fundamental flaws of Mutter 's performances: they are themselves neither mature nor humble. Normally you’d expect a performance of the Beethoven Violin Concerto’s first movement lasting 27 minutes and nine seconds to be on the slow side.
